According to Nichol, the music has to build at precisely the right moments-both in terms of tempo and crescendo. But that doesn't mean that a piece will work well if it's all "vivace" or "presto." Typically, music is chosen which has a change in tempo or, at least, a pause to give the skater a chance to catch her breath. And a piece must always resolve itself in a climax within the given time frame.
